## Caption

Rosa von Praunheim, a pioneer of gay cinema and one of the most influential German-speaking LGBTQ+ activists, had died aged 83. He passed away in Berlin in the early hours of 17 December after marrying his long-term partner last Friday.
Born Holger Radtke, Praunheim adopted his well-known stage name in reference to the pink triangles – ‘rosa winkel’ – that queer men were forced to wear in the holocaust to identify themselves to Nazi guards.

Praunheim made a name for himself in Berlin and beyond with his provocative filmmaking, and his 1971 second feature, titled ‘It Is Not the Homosexual Who is Perverse, But the Society in Which He Lives’, is often described as Germany’s “Stonewall moment” for its radical exposure of queer life. Praunheim went on to make over 150 short films, feature films and documentaries.

On 12 December he married his partner, 50-year-old Oliver Sechting, in a ceremony in Berlin. He announced the marriage on Instagram post showing their hands wearing frog-shaped rings. Praunheim previously told news agency dpa that Sechting had picked them out “because I once told him that I want to be reborn into my next life as a frog”.
