The Theodore Roosevelt Award, also known as "The Teddy," is the highest honor the NCAA may confer on an individual. Named after President Theodore Roosevelt, whose concern for the conduct of intercollegiate athletics led to the formation of the NCAA in 1906, this award is presented annually to a distinguished citizen of national reputation and outstanding accomplishment. Recipients must have graduated from an NCAA member institution, earned a varsity athletics award, or participated in competitive intercollegiate athletics, and exemplify the ideals of collegiate athletics. This years Theodore Roosevelt Award winner is Dikembe Mutombo.

Born in Kinshasa, Republic of the Congo, and blessed with remarkable height and athletic ability, Dikembe Mutombo was not immediately set on a basketball career. It was his brother who encouraged and urged him to pursue the path of basketball. Through persistence, discipline, and a growing passion for the game, Mutombo continued to develop his skills, a journey that ultimately led him to Georgetown University.
During his second year at Georgetown, Mutombo was approached by the late legendary Coach John Thompson, who invited him to join the university’s basketball team. Coach Thompson would later pose a life-shaping question to Mutombo: “One day the basketball will stop bouncing and what will you become?” Guided by that lesson, Mutombo went on to exemplify leadership not only on the court but also through his extensive humanitarian work around the world, dedicating his life to service, giving back, and improving the lives of others.

Greatness isn’t measured in points or trophies, but the people you lift along the way. The legendary Dikembe Mutombo is the 2026 Theodore Roosevelt Award recipient, honoring his legacy of selflessness and the countless lives he has touched.
