Beyond The Nines: An inside look and reflection during a day at the Boston area’s most popular golf hangout

The climb feels like takeoff. Nose pointed skyward, wheels up, and suddenly everything beneath falls away. Granite Links crowns the hill in Quincy as Boston’s skyline is carved out on the horizon. Below, traffic on 93 grinds through another weekday as headlights creep along. From up here, the noise fades. The city looks smaller. The day feels lighter. For a few hours, there is only the hill, the game, and the privilege of being here instead of anywhere else.

As you walk in, a continuous stream of golf balls lifts off, vanishing between the nets, each towering the height of an eight-story building. Each swing propels the hill's steady, rhythmic activity, much like windmills in the breeze. Some are here to perfect their swing, but most come for a cold drink, a pristine view, and the chance to step out and have some quality time with their circle. This in-person connection is tangible, social, and largely free from digital distractions, though, of course, it’s difficult to resist snapping something for the feed.

It’s a scene that’s easy to admire from social media alone. Here, golf meets gourmet. It’s part driving range, part destination wedding, part sunset dinner party. But we wanted to look past the posts, to find out what gives this place its character.
