The Wright Stuff…

On a chilly, windy morning in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, two bicycle mechanics from Ohio, Orville and Wilbur Wright, changed the world forever. Orville climbed aboard their homemade flying machine, the Wright Flyer. At 10:35 a.m., with Wilbur running alongside, it lifted off for 12 seconds and 120 feet! By the fourth flight, Wilbur defied gravity for 852 feet in 59 seconds. And just like that, the first sustained, controlled, powered heavier-than-air flight in history.

So, who was first in flight, Ohio or North Carolina? Both! Feel free to discuss. Learn about early aviation on a visit to North Carolina’s Wright Brothers National Memorial and Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park in Ohio.

Orville pilots the machine, Wilbur runs alongside, and the witnesses who assisted with the flights that day look on and cheer. In the distance, a 60 feet granite monument, dedicated in 1932, is perched atop Kill Devil Hill.
