Waiting for a flight out of Antarctica, a group of marathon runners decided to turn downtime into competition.⁣

Stranded near Union Glacier after the Antarctic Ice Marathon, the runners staged what they say is the southernmost backwards mile ever attempted. Battling freezing temperatures and slippery ground, some even ran in fancy dress, including a snowman and a penguin.⁣

Canada’s Frederic Aubry won the men’s race, while fellow Canadian Amy Ellett took the women’s title and bragging rights.⁣
