It’s that time of year when we come together in our holiday best—ready to celebrate, reconnect, and take in all the festive looks 👀

These Cindy Sherman portraits feel like a holiday party guest list come to life. The glamorous relative, the mysterious plus-one, the one who’s always a little theatrical, the one you swear you’ve met before. Through decades of photographing herself in carefully constructed guises, Sherman creates characters that feel uncannily familiar, reflecting the roles, stereotypes, and identities we all recognize.

“I am trying to make other people recognize something of themselves rather than me.” —Cindy Sherman

By embodying different personas drawn from art history, cinema, advertising, and media, Sherman invites us to see how identity is shaped, performed, and constantly shifting. Her portraits don’t depict specific people as much as personality types, making space for viewers identify the subjects according to their own memories, experiences, and family dynamics onto each image.
