SpaceX is moving toward "real" high-speed cellular service through Starlink, aiming for a future where consumers don't even know they are on a satellite system. 📡

While the current direct-to-cell service has had an outstanding start, the second stage of the plan brings new challenges that require new spectrum, new satellites, and new phones.

To add zeroes to current download speeds, SpaceX plans to launch a new constellation of 15,000 satellites into low and very low Earth orbits. These third-generation satellites, designed for launch on the Starship rocket, will utilize spectrum bought from EchoStar to provide much more than just-in-case messaging. This architecture could even allow SpaceX to bring its own mobile service to market.
