A basket house update: As many of you know, Mr. Babs and I are renovating a one bedroom cottage in a historic neighborhood. In the 1800s, it was a basket shop where baskets were woven and sold. Our goal has been to restore what we could and, when we had to renovate, to be true to the style and age of the home and neighborhood. 
What a wonderful way to kick off the new year together and share an update. This has been such a labor of love. If everything goes as planned, we will have a furnished cottage by mid-February. It’s been quite a journey; we’ve had many helping hands. I can’t wait to share our completed home with you soon where so many memories will be made. 

1. We enclosed the porch. There was previously lattice on the porch, and there is much overlap with lattice and baskets, so it helped us also tell the story of the basket house, so we incorporated it into the design. This is our future breakfast nook 🥹
2. We are trying to incorporate the story and history of the home and neighborhood in many different ways including in these tiles.
3. If you remember, in the great room (which was previously a blacksmith’s shop before it was a basket shop), there were very old stairs that were so narrow you could barely walk up them. We moved the stairs into the entryway and added a bookshelf here for my old cookbook collection 🥹 you can see the new stairs (that look old) pictured above.
4. Historically, pink has been a very prominent color in the neighborhood, so we chose pink for the walk in pantry. Here is a sneak peek of the cabinetry.
5. For the countertops, we went with a 2 cm width for a timeless look. I love how they fit in the space so nicely. 
6. We finished painting the exterior of the home its SW Canal Street. 
7. Many small details, such as some stenciling, wallpaper, and lots of finishing touches, are still to come. I can’t wait to share how we told the story of the history of the Basket Shop through many of the homes details. 

I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to help restore and renovate a piece of history and to be able to call The Basket house home.
