Ayden was almost 4 when he came to us from another foster home. By this time, he'd been in 7 different placements and we were the 8th. He came with a lot of trauma and attachment issues. One of the things he did not like was hugs.

He's not a hugger, I had to tell family and friends and hoped they'd respect his boundary and his personal space. Over the years, I've kept myself open to the way he desires to show affection, writing me a love note or simply saying, "I love you." 

Physical touch is not for everyone and we have to respect that, even for children. As a mother, this was a big deal for me. Foster/Adoptive parents don't do what we do for "show or to be appreciated." However, when your child tells you that and reinforces it with a hug that test their own boundaries, that's a HUGE DEAL and worth celebrating! To me at least! ❤
