Ayden was 4 years old when he came into our lives. As one can imagine, adjusting to a new foster home can be a  rough transition. Since he was our very first placement after we were licensed, I wanted to make sure that he knew our home was his home and that it was okay to just be a kid. He was so attached to this shirt and wore it every day for 3 weeks straight.  I would secretly take it off of him at night and wash it and put it back on him before he woke up. So he would see that we had something in common (we are both Marvel fanatics!), I went out and purchased this gray marvel shirt and I too wore mine every day for 3 weeks. It was like our little thing, it made him feel seen, protected, and safe. After roughly 3 weeks, I sat him down and we had a conversation about the shirt. I asked him why did he not desire to change it. He told me a few things that broke my heart and humbled me at the same time.  Then he seen my watery eyes and said, "Don't cry!" He jumped up in his usual bubbly self and said, "We can change our shirts now mom" First time he'd called me mom. My heart was full! We still have these shirts ❤
Sometimes as a foster parent, you may have to extend yourself just a bit to reach your child...the extension may stretch you, but you will not break!
