“I think it’s important that we advocate for the rights that we want to see in our government and from our officials to advocate for early on, so that we see the changes we want to see and the policies enacted that we want to see enacted,” said Aaron Wheat, a junior civil engineering and public health major from Wichita Falls, Texas.

The 2022 Texas primary election on March 1 sent hundreds of voters to the polls as they voted on which candidates they want to see on the ballot in the November midterm elections. 

Many of those voters were youth voters, who are between 18 to 24 years old and are members of Generation Z. In recent elections, the youth voter turnout has increased as more members of Generation Z become eligible to vote. Generation Z is one of the most diverse, politically and socially active generations in our society. With Generation Z having grown up in a digital age full of resources and information at their fingertips, they will continue to have an important influence on the current and future state of our country.

As members of Generation Z, many students at The University of Texas at Austin headed to the polls and exercised their right to vote in the primary election. I spoke with three different students about their opinions on voting and how voting is important to them. 

Amani Gottlieb, an undeclared freshman from Austin, Texas, shared how her current government class has inspired her to vote in order to make her voice heard and to create changes in our country. Wheat, a junior civil engineering and public health major from Wichita Falls, Texas, emphasized how voting is an important way to influence actual changes and how voting in primaries can help to directly impact local communities. Lastly, I spoke with Alexa Ornelas, a freshman radio-television-film and english major from San Antonio, Texas, who touched on how voting is a privilege that allows Americans to voice their beliefs and inspire real change.
