It’s that time again for… SHAYNA MAYDELE’S HOW-TO GUIDE TO LIGHT THE HANUKKAH MENORAH!!
 
Looking at your menorah (Shayna Maydele is behind it), place the candles right to left, starting with one candle on the first night and adding an additional candle each night.  Light them left to right.  The 9th candle, the shamash, or helper candle, lights all of the others.  This video represents the 8th night.
 
The beautiful Ladino song is Ocho Kandelikas (Eight Little Candles). The Ladino language is a blend of Castilian Spanish and Hebrew, mixed with drops of Arabic, Greek, Turkish and French.
 
Hanukkah is a holiday that celebrates a great miracle and the survival of the Jewish people.  The oil for the menorah was only supposed to last 1 night, but it lasted 8.  We commemorate this miracle by eating latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiyot (donuts), and other foods cooked with oil.
 
Today, the Jewish people again find themselves in troubling times, with people calling for their destruction.  I hope that this Hanukkah brings lots of light, miracles, and peace, and, more importantly, the return of the final hostage.
