For those of you planning your next winter adventure, here are five winter photography tips that can help improve your images and overall experience:
 
1. Maximize color contrast: Winter photography can sometimes be characterized by stark and gloomy, with the overabundance of white, black, and gray tones. So try to capture as much color contrast as possible, and shoot with a circular polarizer filter, which brings out maximum contrast in your colors and highlights.
 
2. Watch/plan for the weather: Winter photography requires more planning than most months, because of how quickly the weather can change, especially in the mountains. Always plan ahead and check local weather forecasts and road conditions to stay safe and have the most accurate idea of the weather for the next few days.
 
3. Fresh is best: Always plan your trips around during or directly after a storm, for the best fresh, snow conditions. Even in cold weather, fresh snow can melt after several hours of direct sunlight.
 
4. Utilize perspective and depth: When shooting in a winter landscape or scene, look for ways to utilize perspective and depth to your advantage. Frame your subject through the branches of a snow-covered tree, use a long lens to create compression and depth, or switch your perspective and try a scene from different angles. Shoot up, shoot down, and capture even the smallest winter details to capture as many perspectives as possible.
 
5. Protect yourself and your gear: If you’re shooting in the wintertime, it’s going to be cold, and you could spend hours outside in freezing or below-freezing temperatures. Always wear warm gloves, a hat, and plenty of layers, and keep your batteries warm.
