“My prayer for you this Christmas is simple: That you pay attention to how God is shaping you, that you notice and trust the slow work of grace within you – those nudges in your heart to be your best self – and that you let God continue God’s work. 

“Because God has already begun something great – and beautiful – in you.” 

Friday’s Christmas at Canisius began with our entire community gathering for our traditional Christmas Mass, where the homily of President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J., concluded with the passage above. Read his full homily at our Facebook page. 

The Mass opened with Assistant to the President Fr. Richard Zanoni, S.J., reciting the Proclamation of the Birth of Christ (look for our forthcoming video that features Zanoni’s reading), followed by members of the Class of 2026 entering the darkened Scaccia Auditorium carrying candles and placing them on a display in front of the altar. 

Many students were part of the Mass through choral and instrumental music, readings and responses, and as Eucharistic Ministers, candlebearers and crossbearer. 

Those participating included: Brody Murray ’26 (First Reading, from the Book of Judges), Max Bruce ’26 (Responsorial Psalm), and Austin Xiao ’26 and Kayden Wayne ’26 (both read the Prayers of the Faithful).

The concelebrants were Director of Campus Ministry Fr. Chuck Frederico, S.J.; Assistant to the Principal Fr. Edward Durkin, S.J.; and Zanoni.
