the making of runaways. 

this one means a lot to me. apologies for the long story… 

the idea first came back in may when I was in the studio with my storm brothers adamwattsmusic and josh_vida (my dream team co-writers on every song I’ve released so far) while filming aweekawayseries 

we had come up with a melody for the chorus, and I had mumbled the word “runaways” a few times so I instantly knew what I wanted to make the song about. 

soon after - I wrote out the first verse, chorus, and second verse in maybe 20 - 30 minutes. it was the first time that the words just flowed out of me. i’ve never been very confident in my songwriting abilities, but these lyrics were different. they came fast because of the conversations and lifestyle that justineverheul and I have been trying to manifest our entire relationship. thinking about our “purpose” in this life being more about getting out, seeing the world and being a sponge to whatever experience comes our way. 

with a first draft done, I played it for justine and we started collaborating on making it even truer to what we believe. initially, I had done the background vocal harmonies. it was only a thought that adam and I had that maybe justine could do the harmony, but once justine and I had made it our own, it was a no brainer. having her on the song makes it that much sweeter and I just love her very very much. 

we had a rough draft of the song for MONTHS and had listened to it countless times over the course of our roadtrip to vancouver. on our trip back to NY, we made sure to have a pit stop in nashville to work with adam and finish the song. 
so on october 16th-18th we got back in the studio and made it what it is today. 

huge shoutout to adam and coco90 who brought the band to life and made the song fuckin electric. 

I am so so so grateful to every one of you who have loved and related to the song so far. this one means the world to us and it makes me BEAM seeing it resonate with so many of you.
