Ruth Anne Arnum, 60, of Middle Island, said she can’t get past the 90-day sentence the driver who fled the scene got after running over her 23-year-old son, Dean Arnum.

The first driver stayed at the crash site, but Corrilyn Meyer, the second driver to hit Arnum, left. Meyer, a U.S. Army veteran and Long Island nurse, was arrested six days later.

A Newsday analysis of state crash data shows that hit-and-run incidents — especially fatal ones — have emerged as a stubborn and deadly trend.

Hit-and-run crashes result in less serious charges without evidence a driver was intoxicated or drove recklessly. Families say 90-day sentences aren’t enough and offer an incentive to flee the scene.
