The skid marks near Exit 32 on the Southern State Parkway, Richard Hare said, were a daily reminder of his family’s loss months after an aggressive driver who weaved in and out of traffic at 93 miles per hour while high on marijuana took the lives of his daughter and two of her friends in November 2022.

Ciara Hare, 18, was driving when a car driven by Matthew Whyte struck her, forcing the car off the parkway and into a traffic camera pole.

The NCC student died in the crash, along with her passengers Florence Oprisan, 18, and Jean-Marc Miller, 22.

The skid marks are now gone, Hare said, but the pain persists.

Excessive speeding, frequent lane changes, tailgating, running red lights, passing on shoulders, distracted driving, driving while impaired — aggressive driving is a broad category and sometimes difficult to define, but motorists in Nassau and Suffolk see it every day. It is disrespectful and dangerous, according to law-enforcement officials, traffic experts and Long Island motorists — and they all agree it has been on the rise in the years after the COVID-19 pandemic.
