When Nakaine Bartholin woke up in the intensive care unit at Mount Sinai South Nassau, she didn’t know how long she had been there or why she was in the hospital, she said.

She just knew she had been hurt badly.

“The pain that I felt was [something] that I don’t think I would wish on my worst enemy,” the 52-year-old said.

Police said an intoxicated driver hit Bartholin’s car head-on. The crash left her with hernias, a fractured foot, a broken toe and internal bleeding and organ damage that forced doctors to remove parts of her colon and intestines.

Since the crash, Bartholin has been in and out of hospitals for foot, back, and intestinal surgeries, and treatment for sepsis.

Meanwhile, her bills keep mounting. Her attorney said she could face up to $700,000 in medical expenses that her former health insurance company declined to pay.
