## Caption

My husband and I live in two different countries for a few months out of the year. While spending time apart isn’t our preference, he plays professional basketball overseas, so our family splits our time between the USA and wherever he’s playing for the season (this season, the UAE). At times, it’s better for our family for the kids and I to remain at home for a few months while he goes overseas. For us, it’s always temporary. Here are 3 things that help us make it work: 

1. Find a schedule that works for you: talking on the phone at least once a day and doing at least one video chat a day is nonnegotiable for us. Given the time differences, we always find a schedule that works so that we can connect and neither one of us are missing out on sleep to do so. 

2. Manage your loneliness: manage your loneliness by staying busy and productive. For us, this looks like me filling my schedule with time with friends and activities for the kids and my husband spending extra time in the gym and exploring the city he’s in. 

3. Make sure your goals align: for us, spending a little bit of time apart is a means to an end. We do this for my husband’s career and we make sure our goals are aligned in terms of how this time sets us up financially. We also always have an agreed upon end date in mind, so we’re on the same page with how long we’ll be doing long distance.
