A lot of my close friends and family members know that I was very reluctant to send Harper to school here in Japan. I had a lot of very real (and some very warranted) concerns about what would happen to my outgoing, confident, sweet little girl if I were to put her in a situation where she is the minority. And I’m not just talking the only black girl in the class… I’m talking possibly the only black girl some of these children have ever even seen in person. At some points, it was a hard no for me. I was terrified and for a while, my fear controlled that narrative.

But, the more that I thought about it, the more that I prayed about it, and the more conversations I had with other mamas, family members, and even Harper’s teachers at home, the more I realized that not at least giving school here a try would be doing her a disservice. I also realized that I was projecting my own fears onto her.

In motherhood, there’s a fine like between doing what we think is best to protect our children and letting fear drive us. Having your heart running around on the outside of your body has to be the most vulnerable feeling in the world. On top of that, I have had some moments as a mama that have been real life scary - so I’m not at all saying that we shouldn’t listen to our instincts. However, we also shouldn’t operate from a place of fear.

Had I let my fear and anxiety run the show, we would not have had amazing experiences at not one, but two international schools here in Japan. Truth be told, we probably wouldn’t even be here this basketball season. I’m so glad I put my fear to the side and opened my mind to what has been such a blessing and such a great experience for my littles.
