When I wrote The Kintsugi Kid, I dedicated it to Harper. The dedication page reads: “To Harper: Thank you for showing me the that in all of my imperfection, I’m still the perfect mama for you. Thank you for reminding me that my broken is beautiful in the most mundane ways - with the hugs I didn’t know I needed, the sweet kisses that made my heart skip a beat, and the reassuring smiles that gave me the confidence that I needed to press in, even on the messiest days.” When I wrote this message to my first born, Jaxson was just a prayer, but it is is even more true now than it was a few years ago. Needless to say, since hubby returned to Japan last week, adjusting back to solo parenting with two kiddos has been challenging at times, but Harper has been such a bright spot even on the days that have been hard or lonely. She’s done a great job rolling with the punches, been super helpful with her baby brother, and been surprisingly well behaved, almost as if she recognized that I needed her to be a big girl for me as I adjust to our new normal and try to stay afloat during this period. Many of you know that I’m very close with my own mom. I prayed and prayed for a mother-daughter relationship similar to the one that my mom and I share. Now that Harper is getting older, I can see that relationship forming and it’s so special.
