The largest piece of Mars on Earth, the NWA 16788, clocks it at no. 3 on the most memorable moment at Sotheby’s this year when it sold for $5.3 million and instantly set a new world record as the most valuable meteorite ever sold at auction. 

The 54-pound Martian meteorite is approximately 70% larger than any other verified fragment from the Red Planet known to exist. Ejected from the Martian surface by a massive asteroid strike, it traveled 140 million miles through space to Earth. Hear more from Sotheby’s Cassandra Hatton.
