• Violet T. Lewis, founder of Detroit’s only HBCU, who defined higher education on her own terms

• Herman J. Russell, who claimed ownership in an industry designed to exclude Black builders

• Alonzo Herndon, who created financial security for Black communities through institution-building

This week, we’re celebrating Kwanzaa through the lens of HBCUs, Black leadership, and legacy — one principle at a time.
