## Caption

For #HispanicHeritageMonth, we've asked students to write an open letter detailing their heritage, their loved ones they share it with, and the lands they come from. Take the time to learn these stories as we share them over the next few weeks ❤️

Meet Axel Caballero, a @rutgersbschool student majoring in Supply Chain Management.

"Dear Mother, 

Twenty-two years ago, you were back at home, surrounded by loved ones who shared your culture. You were in a safe environment, one that you had been familiar with all your life. Who would have thought that your life would be completely different just a year later being three thousand miles away in a country where you didn't speak the language with a baby on the way. Although grandma had pushed for you to come back home and raise me in Mexico, your ambition never stopped. You chose to face hardships and stayed in the United States to give us a better life.

Despite your busy schedule, you always made time to come to my honor roll breakfasts, band recitals, and conferences to show how proud you were of me. Seeing you make that effort pushed me to become the best version of myself. Through all your support I was able to become the first in our family to go to college. Although you were far from home, you carried your culture and shared it with me so it would never be forgotten. Growing up, you made sure my first language was Spanish, taught me our family history, and allowed me to connect with loved ones back home by giving me the opportunity to visit Mexico. You pushed me to be a part of quinceanera courts and always prepared an annual altar for Dia De Los Muertos.

Our culture is now a part of me, and I thank you for not forgetting it. I know I never will. As I am now reaching the end of my college career, I thank you for all your sacrifices and lessons you have taught me. I will never be able to repay you and I hope that you know that your efforts are not in vain. You grew up being proud of me and I grew up being proud of you.
