For #HispanicHeritageMonth, we've asked students to write an open letter detailing their heritage, their loved ones they share it with, and the lands they come from. Take the time to learn these stories as we share them over the next few weeks ❤️ 
 
Meet Karly Mendoza, a @rutgersartsandsciences student double majoring in Political Science and Spanish. 
 
“My beloved Honduras, 
Considering the corruption imposed by the people, your beauty is frequently overlooked and underestimated; you are perceived as threatening rather than troubled, and people avoid you rather than embrace you. 
 
Embrace the land's glory and diversity, from vivid green mountains to lowlands. The profound crystal-clear waters that brush up against your shores, you live up to your name, which signifies great depths. Remarkably, you are home to the world's largest barrier reef and the largest wilderness area in Central America. A country founded on the lands of notable indigenous tribes, including the Lencas, Ch’ortí, Nahua, Miskito, Pech, Tawahka, and Tolupán. The rich culture and cuisine distinguished from the Garífuna footprint in what is now known as Honduras, from the intense punta dancing on the beaches of Tela to el pan de coco sold on the beach for lempiras, a tribute to Lempira, the country's national hero a Lenca cacique who fought strategically against the Spaniards. 
 
However, I will never forget you, I will never neglect you, but I will make sure to embrace you for all my days. Thank you to my organization, Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc., for teaching me to embrace my heritage; an organization dedicated to promoting and preserving Latino culture. My culture is my history; it shapes who I am, and I am proud to know that I am my ancestors' greatest dream.”
