📍Today, we’re highlighting artists who used sound, style, and spoken word to shift culture

• Donald Byrd — A jazz musician and former Howard chair, whose music and teaching fused creativity with education.

• Ruth E. Carter — a Hampton University alum who turned costume design into cultural storytelling.


• Gil Scott-Heron — whose poetry and music reminded us that creativity can be a tool for truth, resistance, and awakening.

Their work shows us that Kuumba isn’t just about creating — it’s about using creativity with purpose.
