Today marks the 56th Anniversary of the release of True Grit (1969) and the 46th Anniversary of John Wayne’s passing (1979).

Duke once said his favorite scene was when Cogburn tells Mattie, “Come see a fat old man sometime,” before jumping a fence on horseback. A moment that’s become iconic in cinema. At the 42nd Academy Awards, Duke won his first Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Rooster Cogburn, joking, “If I’d have known that I’d have put that patch on 35 years earlier.”
