John Wayne was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed voyages on his 136-foot yacht, a converted wooden naval minesweeper, the Wild Goose. The name Wild Goose captured the spirit of independence and fun Duke sought to enjoy when onboard. The boat was original titled USS YMS-328 and it rolled out of the Ballard Marine Railway Company shipyard in Seattle on May 26, 1943, Duke’s 35th birthday.

The actor treated the Wild Goose as a floating sanctuary for his family and friends. Duke would embark on longer voyages to Mexico or up north to British Columbia and Alaska. Activities included fishing, snorkeling, waterskiing and playing card games or chess to pass the time. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
