January 2nd is National Science Fiction Day! This day honors the science fiction genre and the birthday of famous sci-fi author Isaac Asimov (born January 2, 1920). While we don’t really have anything in the print shop at the Sacramento History Museum that is specifically sci-fi related, we took the approach of printing something that appears a lot in sci-fi works.

For today, Howard letterpress printed two electrotypes that depict insects and bugs. These were sent to us a few months ago from one of our followers, Gerry, in Nevada in a box that contained a bunch of cuts associated with the Department of Food and Agriculture in Sacramento, California in 1910-1920s. The image on the right depicts the lifecycle of the Squash-vine borer {Melitlia salyriniformis) and it appeared on page 218 of “Agricultural entomology for students, farmers, fruit-growers and gardeners” (1916) by Herbert Osborn. The image on the left depicts the lifecycle of a tortoise beetle and appeared on page 237 of “Economic entomology for the farmer and fruit-grower” (1906) by Bernhard Smith. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852.

What is your favorite sci-fi book or movie?
