Welcome to the first #SaturdayStorytime. Hope you have fun.
The year is 2017. We’re in Melbourne for the Invitational. If you don’t know it was a 2-3h team competition between USA, Canada, Europe and Pacific.
Side note: massive respect to the athletes that travel from Australia to compete. We were all a little messed up.
The day of the competition they brought us to the venue early, which is normal, we usually do a broadcast walk through and maybe touch some new equipment before live events. The showed us to our team locker rooms then asked us drop our stuff and meet down the hall. I figured we were heading to brief so I went pee first. Surprise! Actually we’re all getting drug tested. Perfect timing…
To my relief I managed to muster up another round, but my sample was too dilute. I was over hydrated. this means they reject the sample. I Have to try again.. I was in pee jail and I Spent the next 3 hours there.
I end up doing the broadcast walkthrough with my chaperone next to me then straight back to jail where they feed me coffee, nuts and a cup of pulled pork to try and get my protein content up and hydration down. Needless to say, a perfect pre comp meal.
I finally make a useable sample minutes before we walk out. No pregame speech, no fuelling, no strategy. Event 1. Go!
Worst heartburn ever. I was in shambles. Event 1 finished with the worm and my body was rejecting exercise in a big way. As bad as I’ve ever felt.
The team did well but I was a liability out there. Every event I felt on the verge of puking until finally Dave announced the final workout on the floor, I asked how long it would take to set up. “We start in 4 minutes”
Great. I bolted off the floor Into the nearest bathroom and emptied my stomach. Clean projectile. Didn’t touch the lips. In, out and back at the start mat in under 2 minutes. I felt amazing in the last workout. Shoulda done that ages ago but oh well, Problem solved.
Canada finished second that year. Could I have been better? Yes. Could I also have thrown up all over the floor on live broadcast? Also yes. So we met in the middle somewhere.
Anyways if you’re ever In Australia and someone tells you to pee make sure you pee good.
