When Alysa Liu told her former figure skating coach, Phillip DiGuglielmo, she planned to return to competitive skating, he was stunned. At first, he thought it was a terrible idea. Liu had been a national champion as a young teenager, retired at 16, and spent nearly two years away from the sport. She made it clear: if she came back, she would be in charge. “I get to pick my own program music. I get to help with the creative process of the program. If I feel like I’m skating too much, I’ll back down. If I feel like I’m not skating enough, I’ll ramp it up. No one’s going to starve me or tell me what I can and can’t eat,” says Liu. DiGuglielmo agreed, and the training began for a comeback that was unheard of in women’s figure skating. #alysaliu #figureskating #sportscomeback #comeback
