Guillermo del Toro, known for his meticulously crafted tales of monsters and ghosts, shies away from being called a visionary. “It’s not like you’re in a recliner with somebody feeding you grapes, going, ‘I see a castle,’” he tells Cooper.

His latest epic, “Frankenstein,” follows a sympathetic creature (Jacob Elordi) and his tormented creator (Oscar Isaac), a project he chased for decades before Netflix greenlit a $130 million horror film. Cooper’s “Is This Thing On?” is equally personal, following a man (Will Arnett) discovering stand-up after his marriage collapses.
