But why do toddlers suddenly seem to become picky?! 👇🏼

At sister’s one-year appointment, my pedi asked about her eating and I shared that some days look different than others, but overall she gets a good variety consistently!!

And her response was “it’s completely normal for toddlers to get picky at this age, so just keep offering”

While yes that’s true, it doesn’t mean we start only offering them what they “will” eat & let them control the menu! Here’s a few things that start happening around 12-15 months👇🏼

- they crave independence! food becomes one of the first places they can say “no” & feel in control (lean into it!)
- food neophobia increases, their lil brains are wired to be more cautious w unfamiliar foods and you’ll start seeing them “inspect” the food (help them explore!)
- oral motor skills are still developing! textures, flavors, temperatures, etc feel unpredictable & they are STILL learning how to eat (show them!!)
- milk and familiar foods feel safe & comfy, they know what to expect + easier to eat/drink (new skills take time to learn)
- growth slows compared to babyhood, so their appetite naturally drops (which is confusing)
- little snackies start happening (& parents not realizing that’s making them not hungry for mealtimes)

So yes, this is developmentally normal for them to be more selective.
But that doesn’t mean we just label it “picky” and wait it out!

It’s still such a key window for shaping taste preferences, food habits, and their relationship with food 🥹

SHARE with another mama to help her better understand the why behind her toddler’s eating changes!!
