I’ve spoken to a few media outlets lately about the art of the stopover and how to make long-haul travel work harder and feel better (see my stories for my recent feature on this subject in travelandleisure !)

Treat the stopover as a destination, not a delay.
More travelers are choosing to slow the journey down. Instead of rushing through connections, a well-planned stopover turns dead time into culture, food, design, and real rest. If you’re already flying long-haul, adding a city en route is often the smartest way to maximize both value and experience.

Choose the right cities and the right airlines.
Some places are simply built for stopovers. Cities like Singapore, Iceland, and Tokyo deliver an incredible experience even in just a few days, especially when paired with airlines designed for seamless routing. Singapore Airlines, Icelandair, and Japan Airlines make it easy, and in some cases, strategic routing can unlock significant savings or smoother journeys. Even something as simple as flying into London and layering short-haul flights across Europe can dramatically reduce long, tiring connections.

Plan one or two anchor experiences.
A stopover isn’t about seeing everything. One great meal, a specific museum, a long walk, or an indulgent afternoon at the spa is more than enough. The goal is not to exhaust yourself, but to arrive at your final destination feeling inspired rather than depleted.
Pack for quick transitions.
Comfortable walking shoes and a well-organized pouch for essentials make unpacking and repacking effortless and keep the experience feeling calm.

Done well, a stopover often becomes the unexpected highlight of the entire trip. The journey stops feeling like something to endure and starts feeling like part of the adventure.
