## Caption

Among the newly-scanned images on our database are these photos from 1931 of firefighting recruits learning to do rescue work. The location was a laneway behind the Central Fire Station on Adelaide Street West, just west of York Street.

1. A man jumps into a life-net, a device sometimes used when there was no other means of escape from a building. Globe and Mail Fonds 1266, Item 25858.

2. A team practices pulling a hose to the top of an aerial ladder. Fonds 1266, Item 25855.

3. Recruits use scaling ladders to access upper windows from the outside. Fonds 1266, Item 25856.

4. A fireman with a hose gains access to an upper-storey window via a scaling ladder. Fonds 1266, Item 25859.

5. Packing up the life net. Fonds 1266, Item 25854.

Cropped versions of these images appeared as a collage on page 13 of the Globe newspaper on November 20, 1931.
