In January 2026, the National Medical Commission shut down the MBBS course at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence after a surprise inspection found serious shortcomings, including major shortages of faculty and doctors, poor hospital patient flow, and inadequate facilities. 

The closure came amid political tension after it emerged that most students in the first batch were from the Muslim community, triggering protests, though the government clarified that admissions were strictly merit-based. 

To protect students and avoid further unrest, the Jammu and Kashmir government decided to relocate all 50 students to other government medical colleges so their education continues without disruption.
