…and scene.

Who knew there’d be so much trauma involved in learning how to be a therapist… or is this part of the process?
Perhaps a test?

I’m so happy to close the books on my 1st of 4 semesters getting my Masters in Social Work. My new internship is incredible, my classmates are fun, but most of all it’s DONE! At least for a bit.

Let me tell you, being a full time student on top of a mom of 3 and company owner (ironically just having my most lucrative quarter in a decade) has been a lot. I’m very excited to have a break from tests and writing. However I will miss the 40 minute car ride each way to listen to podcasts.

I’ve learned so much this semester and see things differently now. For example - transportation is such a barrier for people. Even the simplest things like getting a free coat or food to someone in need isn’t possible if there’s no way to get it to them.

Also - many people become homeless after paying a bill as low as $300. Most often medical bills, which are not only insanely inflated (1 Tylenol can cost $700 in a hospital!) but one of the biggest sources of debt in this country. That means there’s $300 between many people and life on the street. That is not ok and not a lot of money to many people. Think how easily you spend $300 and how that small amount can transform someone’s entire life trajectory.

My other favorite concept is intersectionality. This looks at how many “people” we are at the same time. We are so many things at once and who we are in each environment changes tremendously. Right now I’m a mom, daughter, wife, niece, aunt, student, intern, volunteer, entrepreneur, driver, appt maker, family coordinator, calendar czar, perimenopause advocate, and December break activity coordinator who is SUPER excited to stare at the wall for the day.

I’m trying to give back this break because after seeing how there’s so much need everywhere it’s hard to ignore it. If you’re local and have kids clothes or shoes to donate please reach out. There are many families who need help on Long Island.
