Detroit has changed a lot since I was a student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in the late 90s. While we used to go in and out of the city for sorority and fraternity date parties and formals, it was never a place I spent much time.

When a friend posted a photo at the The Henry Ford Museum - in front of the presidential limo that JFK was riding in on November 22, 1963 - I knew I had to bring my JFK obsessed husband to see it.

The result was a fantastic day trip to Detroit from our family vacation in Ann Arbor.

We starting at The Henry Ford and then toured their Rogue Factory where they make F150 pick up trucks (!).

The Henry Ford Museum was so cool. It had all kinds of American memorabilia including the original Rosa Parks bus, the Wright brothers famous airplane, the chair Abraham Lincoln was sitting in when he was assassinated (at the Ford Theater in Washington DC - no relations), and even an old fashion interactive exhibit where you could put yourself into an 80s music video (remember doing those at amusement parks and then getting a VHS tape!?)!

Next, we headed to the Detroit Riverfront for a bike tour with Wheelhouse Detroit. This great self led tour took us through the Dequindre Cut passage - featuring tons of murals - before continuing around the beautiful waterfront. We loved all the art throughout the ride. But my favorite part was forcing my teenage daughter to ride a bicycle built for two with me. We win when we can with teens…

Last, we ended with some world famous Detroit style pizza at the historic Buddy’s Pizza.

Detroit was absolutely beautiful and filled with so much public art. After lunch we went on a little sculpture and mural walk passing the gorgeous 100 foot tall Stevie Wonder mural by Richard Wilson with a “Greetings From Detroit” postcard below painted on the back of the Detroit Music Hall.

Thank you visitdetroit for setting up a great day!
