happy #techniquetuesday. after a week off we're back at it folks

like last time we're thinking about building speed. in the last installment the subject was playing slow so we can go fast. that's cool or whatever, but to play fast you have to also actually play fast, and aside from ramming your head against the wall no one really ever provided me with tips for how to go faster. the following method is derived from something i learned in body mapping class. i guess the teacher got it from the teacher of her daughter at whatever conservatory that kid goes to.

the idea is that instead of progressively going faster on the metronome we start fast and turn her down. starting fast provides an "oh christ i cant do this feeling" but as the tempo gets slower we are able to get more notes and bring different areas of awareness like remembering to breathe, seeing a dude walk by your window carrying a bunch of sticks, hearing things, noting which parts you struggle to keep the duet with the metronome going, etc. it's also important to strive to incorporate more of your musical intentions in as you get slower. it's a fun mental game where conventionally we go from knowing we can do something to not be sure to, in this method, going from not being sure to having evidence that we are getting more and more aspects of playing.

normally i do this over longer sections of the piece, like the full exposition, because part of playing fast is endurance. today i just did the first phrase for the sake of brevity. i also normally go down in 10 bpm increments but today i did 15.

a) 210 bpm
b) 195 bpm
c) 180 bpm
