She founded Radio One more than 45 years ago, beginning with a single radio station, WOL 1450 in Washington, D.C. Today, Urban One includes more than 70 radio stations across 13 top African American markets and has grown into a multimedia company spanning local and syndicated radio, television, digital platforms, and podcasts. In 1999, Ms. Hughes became the first woman of color to take a company public.

Ms. Hughes is an inspiring entrepreneur, educator, musical visionary, and force for social good, exemplifying self-reliance, resilience, and courage.
