Marion County? More like Marryin’ County with 9 Valentine’s Day courthouse weddings.

The Marion County Justice Court was celebrating a “Day of Love” with a full day of Valentine’s Day-themed wedding ceremonies.

Nine couples signed up to get hitched as part of the special day, which Judge Justin Kidd said he felt inspired to create thanks to his own experience getting married.

Kidd and his husband, Rob Owens, spent years in a domestic partnership when same-sex marriage was illegal. “It was like skim-milk marriage,” Kidd said.

“The courthouse door was barred to us for a long time,” Kidd said. “So when I became a judge two years ago, I made it my life’s mission to spread joy, spread love and have the court and the state respect the dignity of every marriage.”

The goal of the Day of Love was to make a special wedding experience more accessible — especially to people who are native Spanish speakers and those who can’t afford a more lavish ceremony, Kidd said. About half of the 120 marriages Kidd officiated last year were in Spanish, he said.
