This rare 1987 television commercial captures Walt Disney World Resort during one of its most iconic and transitional eras.

In 1987, Walt Disney World was a three-park resort featuring Magic Kingdom and EPCOT Center, with Disney MGM Studios still two years away from opening. The resort focused heavily on multi-day family vacations, educational attractions, and large-scale immersive experiences rather than character-driven franchises.

Magic Kingdom in 1987 still featured many original, now-extinct attractions, including 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the Skyway gondolas, Mission to Mars, Mr Toad’s Wild Ride, and the open-air PeopleMover in Tomorrowland. Fantasyland retained its classic dark rides and original layout long before later expansions.

EPCOT Center was in its purest form during this time, emphasizing futurism, science, and global culture. Future World featured attractions such as Horizons, World of Motion, Universe of Energy with its original dinosaur presentation, Journey Into Imagination with Dreamfinder and Figment, Kitchen Kabaret in The Land pavilion, and massive technology exhibits inside CommuniCore. World Showcase presented authentic cultural entertainment from countries including Mexico, Norway (Maelstrom), China, Germany, Italy, The American Adventure, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Morocco would not open until the following year.

Resort hotels were limited primarily to the Contemporary, Polynesian, and Fort Wilderness, with the Grand Floridian still under construction. Transportation relied on monorails, buses, and watercraft, resulting in a much smaller, more intimate resort footprint than today.

This commercial reflects the corporate sponsorship era of Disney parks, when major companies like General Motors, AT&T, Kodak, GE, Exxon, and Kraft played a major role in attraction design and storytelling, especially at EPCOT Center.

For many guests, this period represents the peak of classic Walt Disney World, with longer rides, large-scale practical sets, slower pacing, and a stronger emphasis on optimism about the future and global unity.

This footage is preserved for historical and educational purposes and showcases a vacation destination that no longer exists in its original form.
