## Caption

Happy World Hippo Day! Hippopotamuses live in rivers, lakes, and mangroves, spending most of their day in the water or mud to keep cool and to protect their delicate skin. But they can’t swim or even float. They walk or run along the bottom of the waterway instead, their eyes and nostrils atop their heads allowing them to see and breathe above the surface. When completely submerged, their ears and nostrils shut tight to keep out water, and the animals can hold their breath for five minutes. These hippos were filmed at Mozambique’s Lugenda River in Niassa Special Reserve (niassaspecialreserve), within a concession managed by Niassa Carnivore Project (niassalionproject). #WorldHippoDay
