Brittany Young calls herself a solutionist. So when the engineer saw a problem in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, USA, she came in with an idea: help end the city’s cycle of poverty by exposing Black kids to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts in real life. And she turned that vision into reality by tapping into the city’s popular dirt bike culture.

Riding dirt bikes has long been an integral part of the city’s DNA, particularly for many young Black kids. Yet the cultural cornerstone has come under fire. So Young and the nonprofit she founded, B-360, came up with a program that helps kids practice the activity in a safe space—while also picking up new skills and exploring new career paths.

There’s physics: Behold the mechanics of popping wheelies. And the team developed coursework designed to immerse kids in the engineering design process by creating a 3D-printed dirt bike they control from their phones.

Young recalls growing up watching billnye, eventually making her way to working with nasa and mccormickspice—busting stereotypes along the way. But that isn’t enough for this changemaker: She wants to get more Black people into STEM.

“I want more solutions to come from the people directly affected by the problem. I want our skill sets to be utilized and paid for as frameworks and assets toward building better communities and to continue to empower more people like me,” she says. “I now see myself as a ‘socioeconomic’ engineer—connecting talent and passion with resources and opportunity by cultivating the skill that was already present.”
