Justine Surena-Mattson ‘23 is a Biomedical Sciences major, but she has a lot more going on than just that. The senior has a minor in Music, and is passionate about modeling as well. She happened to be coming back from the SNR and Measure casting for the Silver Needle Runway when this Red Fox Feature started.

Mattson has been involved with the SNR every year the fashion department has held the event while she’s been attending Marist. When asked about what she loves about it, she said, “It’s kind of awesome being a mini-celebrity and having people take pictures of you, and they’re all so encouraging. It’s awesome seeing other students' work come to life and you have a part of that, it’s really special.”

When it comes to Mattson’s passion for music, she is an active member of the all-treble voice a cappella group on campus, the Sirens. Being in the music community at Marist means a lot to her; “Everyone just has the same passion, and it’s such a beautiful collective as a whole, when you think about it and you’re a part of it, and you’re just one voice. It makes me cry sometimes.”

Even though she can get busy with her extra-curriculars, Mattson’s passion for science is just as important to her. She stated that she’s always loved curiosity-based learning, and that science is a perfect path to explore and learn about what’s happening around us. After she graduates, the senior is interested in conducting research relating to age-related sciences and genetics.

Mattson has advice for freshmen: “Put yourself out there! If you don’t try you’re never going to get it....if you don’t get it, that’s okay, but if you don’t even try you’re definitely not going to get it! Make yourself known.”
