Out to create the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050, government leaders across the EU are testing out new eco-friendly mobility solutions. For Germany, that means switching from diesel to hydrogen-powered passenger trains that expel only steam and condensed water.
🚆
“Emission-free mobility is one of the most important goals for ensuring a sustainable future,” says Henri Poupart-Lafarge, CEO and chairman of the board of Alstom, the French mobility company leading the project.
🚆
The world’s first hydrogen-powered fleet is a decade in the making: German transport authority Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LNVG) first began exploring alternatives to diesel rail cars in 2012. That provided the impetus for @alstom to team up with local partners—engineering company @lindeplc and German transport firm @evb_elbeweser—to complete a two-year trial of the ultra-green Coradia iLint trains.
🚆
From there, government agencies committed €93 million to install 14 of the trains on the route running through Lower Saxony—with other parts of the country scheduled to follow suit. With a range of up to 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), each Coradia iLint train can run for an entire day on just one tank of hydrogen.
🚆
And now other European countries are also on track to make the switch: Alstom has orders for its hydrogen-powered Coradia Stream trains in Italy and its dual mode electric-hydrogen Coradia Polyvalent trains in France, while Austria, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden have run tests of the Coradia iLint trains.
