Here at your Toronto Zoo, Animal Welfare Science transforms behavioural observations into meaningful, impactful, and proactive advancements that reflect our leadership in achieving optimal animal well-being. In recognition of this work, your Toronto Zoo was awarded the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) Animal Welfare Award last year, solidifying our position as a global leader in animal welfare.

In 2025, our Welfare Science team completed over 3,000 behavioural monitoring sessions using ZooMonitor, a digital system for standardized data collection and behavioural analysis. This work supported 30 behavioural monitoring projects across 32 species and 65 individual animals, allowing us to uncover valuable insights into behaviour and well-being. We also collected and coded over 900 hours of video footage, which has allowed us to further support optimal 24/7 well-being. These projects spanned a variety of taxa, including fish, reptiles, birds and mammals, and led to evidence-based management decisions that supported optimal well-being!

These behavioural monitoring projects enabled our One Well-Being team to gain valuable insights across a wide range of topics, including chronic conditions (like aging), key life stages (like pregnancy), and opportunities for growing foundational behavioural knowledge such as the activity patterns and behavioural repertoires of nocturnal species.

We are excited to share that the capabilities of the Welfare Science program continue to grow as your Toronto Zoo recently received the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Animal Care and Well-being grant! This grant will support the expansion of our CCTV camera network, and subsequently our AI behavioural monitoring project “PantherAI”, at the Sumatran tiger habitat, enabling rapid automated assessments of behaviour for all tigers that call your Toronto Zoo home.

As we build on this momentum, we look forward to sharing new innovations and insights with our community that continue to elevate animal well-being at your Toronto Zoo and beyond! #WellbeingWednesday
