AVOIDING FOOD WASTE!

I get obsessive when it comes to party planning with a theme, so when G said he wanted a dinosaur party again, this mama made a dinosaur party happen! 😂🦖🦕💚

I wanted to make tiny dinosaur sandwiches but was worried about the wasted ingredients. To avoid wasting the crusts and cut off parts, we cut each ingredient separately as assembled the sandwiches after cutting them instead of assembling the whole sandwich and then cutting it with the dinosaur cookie cutters. Now I have separate bags of bread, ham, turkey, and cheese scraps that I will be using in other recipes.

First up was this FRENCH TOAST BAKE!

I googled “leftover bread scrap recipes” and found a recipe for “Leftover Bread Breakfast Casserole” by @melaniecooks

Now listen up - I’m not the best baker (I don’t follow instructions lol). I didn’t measure the bread or the sugar, I used brown sugar instead of white sugar, I used maple syrup instead of vanilla, and I have no idea how long I baked it at first - so there is nothing wrong with this recipe. I just didn’t follow it correctly 😂 

Honestly, not following the instructions could have led to more food waste. But as we say, I let the ancestors guide me 😂 and I threw some butter + more sugar and milk on that French toast bake and MWAH 👩🏾‍🍳🤌🏾 *chef’s kiss!* DELICIOUS!

Another note, it reheats well 😫🙌🏾 even less food waste since we didn’t eat it all on the day we made it.

Note: If you don’t have a random huge pile of bread like this to make this recipe, think about freezing bread scraps as you go. My Granny would freeze the cornbread leftovers in the weeks leading up to November and use those + however much fresh baked cornbread was needed to make dressing.

Next up, I’ll be adding the sandwich meat scraps to some egg muffins that we’ll freeze to eat for when baby gets here.

I’m actually having fun with reinventing and reimagining food scraps.
