71-year-old man Hisao Mitani has spent nearly three decades caring for Bon-chan, a 27-year-old African spurred tortoise weighing about 154 pounds. ⁠

The pair are a familiar sight in the Tsukishima neighborhood, where Bon-chan often strolls the streets wearing custom outfits like rain jackets and caps. Mitani began walking Bon-chan daily after the tortoise experienced a major growth spurt around age 10. ⁠

Adopted in the late 1990s when he was small enough to fit in a hand, Bon-chan has since grown into a local celebrity and remains inseparable from his owner.⁠
