Every professional sport has a mental aspect. When we’re in intense situations, it’s easy to beat ourselves up, especially coming up in competitive environments and watching others improve alongside (and sometimes faster than) us. 

Racing is no different, and it’s easy to see how quickly this takes a toll on the psyche. 

There are times when it feels like you perform at your highest level, and still don’t get a result, and there are other times you just didn’t perform enough. In racing, I have incredible teams of people behind me, preparing my car and hoping as much as I do that I bring it home for the win. 

But there are some days where that just doesn’t happen. 

I think for all of us professionals, there’s a point in time where the sport becomes more than a sport. It becomes the perspective through which we see our entire life. It becomes part of our very identity. I think this is what makes the greats who they are, but it can also be a scary and unhealthy place. 

A bad race isn’t just a bummer; it can make us question everything. “Who am I, and why am I doing this? Am I even good at this? What do they think of me?”

I love this sport. Racing is my greatest passion. But, the things that matter most to us have a lot of power over us, too. I’ve realized I have to be really intentional about the way I understand my relationship to racing, and my own identity and worth as a human outside of it. 

And as a perk, the healthier I am in my own self independently of racing, well... The better I race.
